This is the country that used to be where the oppressed and downtrodden from around the world flocked to for a better life. The place that took in everyone and anyone with the promise of a better life. Or at least the possibility to try for one.
It should be no surprise that President Orange Crush signed the executive order banning people from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen from entering the country. After all, this is the guy who campaigned on a Muslim ban. It is a little surprising that Saudi Arabia didn't make the list, or Egypt, considering people from those two countries have actually supplied all of the 9/11 attackers. (Or maybe not, considering President Trumpelstiltzkin has business interests in those two places.)
What is a surprise is that anyone thinks this is going to have any practical effect on making us safer.
In the past ten years, do you know how many Americans have been killed by Islamic terrorists per year, on the average? I'll tell you: 9. Nine. Not nine million. Not nine thousand. Nine. There are more than 321 million people in this country. That means if you're an American, you have a 1 in about 35.6 million chance of being killed by a terrorist. How long are we going to continue to run scared in this country? We got hit one time, a decade and a half ago, and we have to use fear to control everything for the rest of our existence? You have a 1 in 27,300 chance of being killed by a gun. But the 1 in 35.6 million is the number we have to get down,, somehow? How does that make any fucking sense?
But hey, Muslims is scary. So let's enact a policy that's completely at odds with everything this country is supposed to stand for, that haphazardly written and enforced, defy federal judges who rule it unconstitutional, piss off the rest of the world, and further convince Muslim majority countries that there actually is a war between Islam and the West. Brilliant idea.
