I think it should be pretty obvious that there was no way in hell I was going to watch the State of the Union Tuesday night. The hockey game that was on gave me cover, not that I really needed it. But there's pretty much nothing that would come out of the Moron-in-Chief's mouth that I would have believed or cared about.
But this presented another example of how Republicans in this country seem to get, as Bill Maher refers to it, Patriotic Immunity. Anything they do is OK, but when liberals do it, they throw tantrums.
Let's start at the beginning: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who was in charge of Donald Trump's impeachment, has had a lingering feud with President Clownshoes for a while now. He doesn't like her, she doesn't like him. It's like a rap battle. Or a college football rivalry. Or a marriage. But realizing that it was the SOTU, and he is the... hmmm........president... she offered him a handshake at the start of the thing. Which he refused.
Well, that's a great bipartisan start, eh? She offers a gesture of respect, and the Prez basically tells her to pound sand. Now, full disclosure here: I don't have a problem with this.
I'm 100% on board with impeachment. Trump is a dirtbag who's used the office of the Presidency to enrich his properties, sow a greater divide between people in this country, and generally embarrassed us all around the world. Hell, he tried to get a foreign power to investigate Joe Biden over what amounts to nepotism, yet his daughter and son-in-law work in the goddamned White House. Republicans have no problem with any of this, but Smoky Joe hooks his kid up, and it's grounds for anything Trump wants to do. Patriotic Immunity.
But if I were the President, and was just impeached, I'd be tempted not to shake the Speaker's hand in a gesture of immense emptiness. Pelosi can't stand Trump, and everyone knows it. She showed just barely enough respect for the office to make the gesture, and that's it. Well, he rejected it. I can live with that.
And then ultra-conservative, racist, misogynist, lying, conspiracy-spewing windbag Rush Limbaugh gets the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Oh, great. Terrific. This is rich. Melania Trump, who has an anti-bullying campaign, while married to one of the biggest bullies on the planet, puts a Medal on the neck of another gigantic bully in the halls of Congress. Are you fucking kidding me? Rush Limbaugh has been patient zero for the political divide in this country his entire career. I'm not even going to get into the list of despicable things he's said over the years; it's readily available.
Let's just call this what it is: A complete Troll Job. This is Trump just doing something to own the libs. And guess what? It worked. I feel owned. I feel like a $20 hooker and my latest customer just skipped out on the check. But again, it's fine, because he's a Republican. Patriotic Immunity. It's OK, because he's one of theirs.
So let's fast-forward to the end of the night: Nanci Pelosi, after Trump finished he speech, picked up her copy of it and ripped it up, on camera, for the world to see. Nothing wrong with that, right? I mean, civility and respect are completely out the door. Refusing a handshake, honoring a bigot with the highest honor a civilian can get -- hey, this is a knife-fight. Pelosi rips up some paper RESPECT!! CIVILITY!! UNGRATEFUL BITCH!! HE'S THE PRESIDENT!! Patriotic Immunity.
The Republican base is like the seven-year-old boy who constantly pesters his older brother. He dumps fingerpaint into his gym bag, barges into his room when he's kissing his girlfriend, takes his CDs and scratches them, and then runs to mommy when Billy throws a Nerf ball off his face. Grow the fuck up.
I mourn for the complete lack of civil conduct this country has devolved into. But let's not kid ourselves here. The divide is so great, that nothing done by either Pelosi or Trump last night are going to do anything but further entrench both sides. The Dems who love Pelosi love her more, and the Repubs who hate her hate her more. The Repubs who love Trump love him more, and the Dems who despise him despise him more.
At least my guys are finally starting to play the game the same way the other side it. The Democrats have been fighting this knife-fight with bean bags for a long time. It's about time some Democrats brought out their own knives.
